Nicolas Cage & Face/Off Director Reuniting After 30 Years For New Crime Biopic

Nicolas Cage and Face/Off director John Woo are reuniting after 30 years for a new crime biopic, Gambino. The actor and director first collaborated on the 1997 sci-fi action thriller Face/Off, which was a critical and commercial success at the time of its release and has since developed a devoted cult following and is widely regarded as one of John Woo's best movies.
Now, according to Deadline, Nicolas Cage and John Woo are reuniting for a crime biopic, Gambino, about the infamous New York mob boss. The screenplay was written by George Gallo (Bad Boys franchise) and Oscar winner Nick Vallelonga (Green Book).
The film will follow Nicolas Cage as Carlo Gambino, a Sicilian butcher's son who comes to rule New York's criminal underworld with a calm yet commanding presence. After Gambino's death shakes the city in 1976, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Jimmy Breslin embarks on an investigation to uncover the truth behind the myth.
Through the testimonies of those who admired and feared him, Breslin unravels the composed exterior that concealed Gambino's brutality, ultimately exposing how he transformed the meaning of power, loyalty, and the American dream.
Carlo Gambino was among the most infamous figures in American organized crime during the 20th century. The Sicilian-born mob boss led and lent his name to New York's Gambino crime family, exerting significant influence over the underworld for more than five decades until his death in 1976.
Interestingly enough, Nicolas Cage's Face/Off co-star John Travolta played a boss in the Gambino crime family, John Gotti, in the 2018 biopic Gotti. That movie massively underperformed both critically and commercially, and is one of the few films with a 0% score on Rotten Tomatoes, so Cage and Woo are surely hoping for better results with Gambino.
Oscar winner Nicolas Cage (Leaving Las Vegas) made headlines last year with the horror movie Longlegs and currently has several projects underway, including a John Madden biopic, and he also plans to begin shooting the Lords of War sequel soon.
John Woo is an action maestro famed for his signature "bullet ballet" style, and is celebrated for his Hong Kong classics like The Killer (1989) and Hard Boiled (1992), along with his Hollywood hits such as Hard Target (1993) and Mission: Impossible II (2000). Most recently, he directed a remake of The Killer (2024) released exclusively on Peacock.
Directed by John Woo, with a script written by Mike Werb and Michael Colleary, Face/Off follows Nicolas Cage and John Travolta as a terrorist and an FBI agent who undergo surgery to swap faces. With Cage and Woo joining forces once again, Gambino promises a gripping and stylish return to the world of crime.
